Anisa Mohamed urges fans to support WI women

The globe’s leading International Twenty20 wicket-taker, Anisa Mohammed, has called on fans of the regional women’s team to rally around them as they prepare to host England in a highly anticipated five-match One-Day International Series in October.

Still basking in the celebratory high of their recent ICC World Twenty20 victory in India last month, Mohammed has been maintaining her form by representing her club, Jus United, on the local circuit.

She, however, has requested that supporters carry this winning momentum throughout the coming months as they begin preparations ahead of the English tour of the Caribbean where matches have been scheduled for Jamaica.

“It would be really nice to see our supporters coming out to give us some cheer on the day,” she said when contacted yesterday.

“A lot of people had previously said to me that they woke up early to watch the T20 Tournament (in India), so it would be great for us to continue receiving such support when England visits the Caribbean. A lot of people have never actually seen us play as a team live, so we are optimistic that this tour would reignite that spark in our fans.”

The 27-year-old right-arm spinner remains quietly confident that more matches would be brought to the region, with the hope that their fan-base would grow at a rapid pace.

Following their historic World T20 title-winning victory against favourites Australia, Mohammed expressed elation to finally get a chance to play in front of home support.

“I would really like to see more tours coming to the Caribbean, but it’s the ICC’s (International Cricket Council) decision,” she added. “More games in the Caribbean though, will augur well for women’s cricket regionally.

Who doesn’t like playing at home?”
