GCB NSSCL 2016… Richard Ishmael tumbles Kingston High in low-scoring match

One day after edging Queens College by seven runs, Richard Ishmael Secondary tumbled Kingston High to register a 51-runs victory in a low-scoring encounter at GCC ground in the 2016 edition of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) National Secondary School Cricket League (NSSCL).

Batting first, the jubilant youths from Richard Ishmael only managed 125 in 24.5 overs. It was a worrying score since it was a fast Bourda outfield on a steaming hot day. Only Juspice Jones and Brandon Ramnarine offered any resistance with 18 and 17 respectively. Bowling for Kingston High, Meshack Soffleigh had 2/14 and Jonathan Sthill took 2/43.

When Kingston High took to the crease the few spectators expected an exciting match but it took only 17.2 overs for the match to finish. Jospice Jones followed up his fighting effort with the bat with impressive spells at the bowling crease. He ran through the batting line up, claiming 5/15 as Kingston High crumbled for 74.

At DCC, the match was a one-sided affair between St. Stanislaus College and Brickdam Secondary. St. Stanislaus batted first and amassed 185/9 in 25 overs; Joshua Bankay led the way with 53 while Shemar Bryan and Veraj Persaud contributed 23 and 20 respectively. Bowling for Brickdam Secondary, Shane Sukhai took 2/10 and Darren Elias had 2/22.

It was an uphill task for Brickdam Secondary from ball one but they didn’t show any intention of getting there. They limped to 89/8 in their 25 overs. Daniel Persaud was the pick of St. Stanislaus bowlers, taking 3/2.

Over at Everest, Friendship Secondary thumped Xenon Academy in their East Bank Demerara zone encounter. Friendship Secondary made 138/9 off 20 overs. Jamal Scott top scored with 38 and Orlando Ghisiawan scored 24. Bowling for Xenon Academy, Leonard Thomas had 3/16 and Rasheed Evans took 2/32.

Ghisiawan returned with the ball to take 4/8 along with Scott who took 3/9 as they share seven wickets between them which helped dismissed Xenon Academy for 57 in their reply.

Meanwhile at Enterprise, Hope Secondary defeated Grove Secondary by 103 runs in the first fixture of the East Coast Demerara zone after they racked up 173/6 in just 25 overs. Phillip Doodnat top scored with 52 not out. Trevor Blair was the pick of the Grove Secondary bowlers with 3/26.

Grove Secondary faltered to 69 all out in 14.4 overs as Cordell Martin took 3/23 for Hope Secondary. Deosarran Narine, Gopaul Applesammy and Tyrese Layne had two wickets apiece.

The match between St Stanislaus and Brickdam Secondary is currently under protest as both teams had allegedly fielded ‘over-aged’ players. A student must be born on or after September 1, 2000 in order to be eligible to represent his school in this year’s competition.

The NSSCL continues tomorrow with matches at DCC where Christ Church Secondary takes on St Mary’s High, Queenstown Secondary plays Mae’s at GCC, Charlestown Secondary will do battle against Dolphin Secondary at GNIC ground, while at Everest, Houston High plays Soesdyke Secondary. Hindu College faces President College at Enterprise in an East Coast Demerara fixture.
