GCB/DMLAS/MOE/NSSCL….. South Georgetown Combine beats East Georgetown Combine in thrilling one run victory

South Georgetown Combine and East Georgetown Combine competed fiercely in yet another exciting Guyana Cricket Board/ Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society/ Ministry of Education/ National Secondary School Cricket League match, which was played today Saturday 18 March, 2017 at the Enmore Community Centre ground, on the East Coast of Demerara.

South Georgetown won the toss and elected to bat, posting a challenging total of 182 all out off 35 of their allotted 45 overs. At one stage, South Georgetown appeared set to bat East Georgetown out of the match, as Stephon Wilson secured 74 with 6 fours and Tuen Hicks 42 with 3 fours, enabling their team to score at a run rate that should have clearly given them a total in excess of 250 runs.
However, the superb bowling of Devon Allen 3 for 22 off 6 overs and Wayne Bollers 2 for 48 off 9 overs, gave the East Georgetown team a much needed boost in the field. The South Georgetown batsmen found East Georgetown’s bowling resistance somewhat challenging to surmount, as they were eventually restricted for less than 200 runs, with as much as ten available overs remaining. This fact of remaining overs, suggested that that South Georgetown’s aggregate score could have been more mammoth had their batsmen applied a higher level of tolerance, by being more selective in their stroke play and by placing more emphasis on rotating the strike, as against hitting boundaries.

In reply, East Georgetown stepped to the crease confidently, with a batting display that seemed to equal their opponents’. This evidence was exhibited as Nkosi Beaton smashed the balls to all parts of the ground, reaching 74 with 6 fours and 1 six, in flamboyant fashion. Beaton was well supported by Osafa Greene 23 and Ameer Singh 21, as they made South Georgetown, panic, choke and stumble along their quest to secure victory. However, South Georgetown managed to hold their nerves to pull off a one run thriller, as the last wicket came via the run out route.

Bowling for South Georgetown, Jamal Michael grabbed 3 for 33 from 9 overs, Shadrach Bacon 2 for 42 from 7 overs, Mohamed Jameer 2 for 17 from 5 overs.

North Georgetown Combine will now do battle with the Rest of Georgetown- South and East Georgetown Combine on Wednesday 22 March, 2017 at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Bourda.

On Monday 20 March, 2017, Upper Demerara-East Bank Combine will take on West Demerara Combine at the Zeeburg ground from 0930 hours.
