West Demerara defeated East Bank by 19 runs today to retain the Demerara U-19 title sponsored by Diamond Fire & General Insurance Inc this year.

Batting first at the Wales Community Centre ground, West Demerara got up to 186 all out in 47.5 overs. Avenash Dhaniram top scored with 35 while Ronaldo Renee and Richie Looknauth chipped in with 28 and 24 respectively. Bowling for East Bank, Ryan Shun grabbed 4/42 and Deonarine Seegobin captured 3/25.

In reply, East Bank fought hard but eventually succumbed for 167 from 47.5 overs. Deonarine Seegobin led the way with 35 and got support from Ricky Debidial who made 22. Ewart Samuels (2/15) and Travis Persaud (2/27) were among the wickets.

Seegobin was judged man-of-the-match.

At the Everest Cricket Club ground, Georgetown shocked the Competition’s favourite with a 27 runs victory.

Georgetown managed 145/9 off their 50 overs. Kemol Savoury and Cleon McEwan top scored with 45 a piece. The significant bowlers for East Coast were Matthew Shutahal (2/28), Richard Woolford (2/15), and Gavin Moriah (2/30).

In their chase, East Coast never got going and was eventually bowled out for 118 in 27.2 overs. Only Rodolph Singh managed a significant score (58*). Sherfane Rutherford was the destroyer with the ball, accounting for 5/14 off five overs. Steven Sankar was also among the wickets with 3/22 of 4.2 overs.
This competition was a close battle among Georgetown, East Coast, and West Demerara; all of them achieved two victories. West Demerara emerged the winner since they finished with a superior run rate.

At the closing of the competition, Assistant Manager of Diamond Fire & General Insurance Inc, Rabindranauth Basil, said they are satisfied with the outcome of the competition and they are happy to be associated with youth cricket in Demerara

Vice-President of Demerara Cricket Board, Anand Sanasie, highlighted that this year’s competition was the best for the close competition. He further thanked the sponsors for coming on board and look forward for their support in the future.

The Vice-President complimented the Executives of Enmore Community Centre and clubs in Georgetown for ensuring that their areas were represented in this competition. And despite the challenges, look forward for the U-17 and Women competitions in Demerara.
