WICB PCL 4-Day 2016…..Guyana Jaguars and Leeward Hurricanes play to a draw

A combination of persistent rain and Captain Leon Johnson’s well composed 79 help quell a burst from West Indies under-19 pacer Alzarri Joseph to help the Guyana Jaguars draw their ninth round match of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)/ Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day tournament at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, Antigua.

Jaguars resumed the day on 108-2 with Johnson on 51 and Singh on 16, trailing by 132 runs after the Hurricanes enforced the follow-on.
As rain prevented much play in the early morning sessions, the little play that was achieved saw Johnson being dropped at square-leg by Jeremiah Louis off the bowling of Gavin Tonge on 59; then another chance which completely mirrored the first when he was on 66 with the total at 131-2.

Johnson settled and saw the Jaguars reaching lunch at 145-2 with Johnson on 77 and Singh 21, still needing 92 to make Hurricanes bat again.

Another rain delay occurred just after lunch but soon as the skies cleared, Johnson (79) was bowled by Joseph and two overs later, the bowler had Christopher Barnwell (00) out caught and bowled; then Joseph had Raymon Reifer (06) out caught behind.

A couple of over later, off-spinner Rakheem Cornwall got the wicket of the resolute Singh for 32 as Guyana slipped to 173-6 at tea.

Just after tea, two quick wickets fell as Joseph got the better of Veerasammy Permaul (01), then Cornwall got Bramble (11) as the Jaguars were now 187-8 and a defeat seemed evident.

Former West Indies Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul (25 not out) and Devendra Bishoo (16 not out) took the Jaguars to 222-8 when play was brought to a close; Joseph ended with 4-74 while Cornwell took 3-34.

Scores: Hurricanes 430 (Hodge 149*) Jaguars 190 (Reifer 48, Tonge 4/37) & 222/8 (Johnson 79, Joseph 4/71)

Jaguars will now return home for their final match against Jamaica Scorpions starting at the National Stadium, Providence, starting on Friday.
