On Sunday 24th September, 2017, we saw an appealing finish to round four of the 2017 GCB/Jaguar 3-Day league with the unstoppable Essequibo team defeating Upper Georgetown, West Berbice burying East Coast and Lower Corentyne winning East Bank in this round.
At the Tuschen ground on West Coast Demerara, Essequibo resuming on their overnight score of 155 for 5 chasing 183 for victory over Georgetown, reached 194 for 7 to maintain their dominance in the league. Ricardo Adams moved from his unbeaten overnight score of 95 to 116 not out, ending the match with two consecutive sixes. The other not out batsman was Anthony Adams, zero. Mark Williams was earlier dismissed by Christopher Barnwell, hooking at a short delivery to be caught on the fine leg boundary by Sunil Singh. Bowling for Georgetown, Christopher Barnwell was the main wicket taker, grabbing 6 of the 7 Essequibo wickets to have fallen.
Essequibo won by 3 wickets.
Over at Young Warriors in Cumberland, Berbice, Upper Demerara/ East Bank commencing the third day on 43 for 5, and needing another 245 runs to secure victory over Lower Corentyne, fell 115 runs short of their winning target. Ronaldo Ali Mohamed made 51, Ershad Ali 39 and Sherefane Rutherford 32. Niall Smith took 5 for 27 and Kassim 4 for 59. Lower Corentyne won by 114 runs.
At Port Mourant Community Centre ground, West Demerara resuming on their overnight score of 59 for 1, asked by Upper Corentyne to follow on through to a first innings deficit of 184. West Demerara set about their task in a professional reaching 371 for 5 from 116.1 overs when the two captains decided to call off play. Akshaya Persaud made a superb unbeaten 151, Raymon Reifer a brilliant 88, and Romario Sheperd a solid 61. Bowling for Upper Corentyne, Clinton Pestano, Dimitri Cameron, Shawn Perreira and Rajiv Ivan each took a wicket.
At the Bush Lot ground, in West Berbice, West Berbice recorded their first win of this year’s GCB/ Jaguars 3 Days League, when they defeated East Coast Demerara by 3 wickets. West Berbice, resuming on their overnight score of 27 without loss and needing a further 261 for victory from a minimum of 100 overs, reached 281 for 7. Young batting sensation, Shimron Hetymer slammed 114 from just 121 balls. A knock which included 7 fours and 5 sixes. Raffel Estraido 55, Avishkar Sewkarran 35, and Gudakesh Motie 26. Bowling for East Coast Demerara, Royston Simon 2 for 19, Amir Khan 2 for 63, Bhaskar Yadram 2 for 80, and Cordel Mars 1 for 24. West Berbice won by 3 wickets.
This brings a close to round 4 of the tournament while round 5 is set to commence on Friday 29th September, 2017 with the top dogs, Essequibo facing Upper Corentyne at Port Mourant, West Berbice taking on East Bank at Bush Lot, East Coast battling Lower Corentyne at Lusignan and West Demerara opposing Georgetown at Tuschen. All games are scheduled to commence from 9:30 a.m.
