The 2017 GCB Female Under 19 Inter County Tournament concluded yesterday, Sunday 9th July 2017 at the Everest Cricket Club Ground, situated on Camp and Carifesta streets.
The tournament was one of great hype, excitement and enthusiasm, as over forty of the nation’s young females engaged in a relatively competitive tournament that witnessed the representative teams of Berbice and Demerara establishing their dominance over the other two competing teams of Essequibo and the President’s X1.
Essequibo ended the tournament in third position, having beaten the President’s X1 by 39 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method. This was the first match played on Sunday 9th July, 20017. The President’s X1 won the toss and inserted Essequibo to bat. Essequibo’s innings was affected by rain after 11.4 overs, with their score on 84 for 7. When play resumed, the overs were reduced to 14 per side, with Essequibo only managing to reach 88 all out off 12.1 overs.
Stacy Moses made 20 and Kenesha Tucker 16 runs. Kassica Monroe took 4 for 28 and Rushanna Lynch 2 for 14.
In reply, the President’s X1 needed 80 to win via the Duckworth Lewis method but were only able to muster 41 off 10. 2 overs. Kamim Ramsammy top scored with 13, while Kimmone Thomas grabbed 6 for 9 off 3 overs.
In the second and decisive match of the day, Demerara opposed Berbice with both teams poised on equal points, setting up an exciting clash for championship honors.
Demerara batted first and managed to reach 68 off 17.3 of their allotted 20 overs, thanks to an impressive knock by number six batter, Abigaile Scott who made a solid unbeaten 29 runs. Shabika Gajnabi took 3 for 4 and Omadevi Matadin 2 for 11.
In reply, Berbice lost Sheneta Grimmond for duck, LBW to Sherry Ann Fraser, with Berbice yet to score. Marian Samaroo and Shabika Gajnabi took Berbice safely to their target, reaching 69 for one to win by 9 wickets, and to lift the 2017 GCB Under 19 Inter County Tournament trophy.
Honarary Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie, said that 26 players will be shortlisted to participate three more matches, geared at preparing and selecting a national team.
