The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and Cricket Guy Inc. extend heartiest congratulations to Shimron Hetmyer on scoring his first first-class century which he achieved at the Guyana National Stadium on Friday, the first day of the crucial final round match of the WICB PCL 4-Day 2015/16 between Guyana Jaguars and Jamaica Scorpions.
His positive approach to his innings was a pleasure to behold, especially since Guyana needed a strong start to a ‘must win’ match. He hit the ball all around the ground and rotated the strike excellently which took the pressure off Rajindra Chandrika who started cautiously. Hetmyer did not spare any bowler; his entire innings was fluent. The longer version of cricket also needs such stroke plays and fast scoring. Aggressive batting puts pressure on the opposition bowling and fielding; hence, the game becomes lively and interesting.
Our immediate aim at the GCB is to prepare Hetmyer mentally to produce similar innings consistently and go on to build bigger innings. He is overflowing with confidence and talent, a natural leader, and is hungry to be one of the greats of this lovely game. We believe he would be a valuable asset to the West Indies team in the near future. Just last month he led the West Indies Under-19 team to their first ever World Cup victory; his leadership was second to none, and he also scored a match winning half century against Bangladesh in the semifinal.
Hetmyer has been consistent in his outstanding achievements. Over the recent years, he has dominated youth cricket in Guyana and has been the most talked about and admired opening batsman in the West Indies. Big things are expected from him. The Executives, Members and Staff of the GCB and CGI are extremely proud of his rapid elevation. We are eager and excited to see him excelling at the highest form of the game. We wish him a long and successful career.
