The Executives, members and staff of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) congratulate the Windies men and women teams for creating history by winning both the male and female World T20 titles last Sunday in India. We are the first cricket nation to achieve this accolade; being the current ICC World Cup U-19 champs, we are also the first to win three world titles in one year.
We are extremely proud and thrilled about our men and women accomplishments. They have exhibited immense courage, self-belief and determination. They were courageous, assertive and grabbed opportunities when presented. In the men’s contest, different players took the responsibility at various times to ensure their team achieved victory; in so doing defining a powerful and a winning team. Similarly, in the female contest our ladies were consistent and dominant.
We acknowledge the captains, Darren Sammy and Stafanie Taylor for their sensible and warrior-like leadership. Taylor led from the front with the bat and ball which saw her copping the Player-of-the-tournament award. Over the past few years, this young lady is undoubtedly emerged as one of the most reliable and consistent female cricketers in the world. We at the GCB admire her talent, salute her achievements and wish her continued success.
We also laud Marlon Samuels, Carlos Brathwaite and Hayley Matthews on their breathtaking match-winning innings in the finals. They became heroes that day, and brought immense joy to the Caribbean people and West Indies supporters across the world.
We also salute the management, support staff of the team and the WICB for their levels of commitment and proficiency. It is a truly a defining moment in our cricket in the history of our West Indian cricket.
