To coincide with its 70th anniversary, the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) launched its first annual magazine, titled “The Guyana Cricketer,” on 28th February, 2014, at the Georgetown Cricket Club pavilion.
The cover of the magazine features Guyana and West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who became the first West Indian to play 150 Tests last year. Also on the cover are the GCB reigning cricketers-of-the-year, Leon Johnson and opener June Ogle.
The main article is titled “Shiv Chanderpaul – symbol of longevity and resilience” by Trinidad and Tobago based Guyanese writer Brij Parasnauth. There are also features on young cricketer Ronaldo Ali Mohamed by Calvin Roberts.
Marketing Manager of the GCB, Raj Singh, told the gathering of sponsors and special invitees, that the publishing of the magazine is no longer a dream, but a reality now, and expressed his gratitude to the sponsors who readily came on board.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar congratulated the GCB executives on the magazine. He pointed out the magazine documented “history” and the GCB must be complimented for its role in helping to preserve what has transpired over the years. He further urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure “cricket is played on the fields and not in the courts.”
GCB Secretary Anand Sanasie said the Board is open to suggestions on making the magazine better, noting that they have already received several pieces of advice for next year’s publication.
Acting president of the GCB, Fizul Bacchus, thanked all the corporate entities and individuals for supporting the magazine, adding that the Board is committed to the development of game at all levels.
The 60 pages magazine is distributed free in Guyana and the Diaspora.
