Essequibo upsets Demerara, as Berbice outshine Guyana U 15 Select X1

The GCB Igloo Ice Cream sponsored Under-17 Inter County One Day 50 Overs Tournament, continued with its second round of matches at GCC, Bourda and Everest grounds today, Thursday 27 April 2017. The second round of matches witnessed the Guyana Under-15 Select X1 competing with Berbice at the Everest ground, and Demerara challenging Essequibo at the GCC, Bourda ground.
At the GCC, Bourda ground, defending champions Demerara batted first, seemingly with the intent to post a big score low raters Essequibo. However, Essequibo had other ideas and sent back national youth opener Sachin Singh for duck off the first ball of the day. Demerara then lost the second wicket with the score on 20, when Adrian Hinds was bowled by Leon Swami for 4. Alphius Bookie and Robin Williams then took the score to 52, before the latter was caught Parasotan off Lance Roberts for 18. Without any addition to the score, Rankin then sent back Pradesh Ballkishun LBW for one, to give Essequibo their fourth wicket, to sink Demerara into further trouble at 58     for 4.
Alphius Bookie who spent some time at the crease, having begun his innings on the second ball of the day, after national player Sachin Singh was dismissed, was then adjudged LBW for 18 off the fourth ball of the eighteen over, off the bowling of Rankin. Bookie’s dismissal left Demerara 69 for 5. Two wickets then quickly followed, as Ashmead Nedd was caught Azeem Mohamed bowled Ranking for 4, and Andrew Samaroo caught by wicket keeper Jailall off Lance Roberts a for duck, to leave Demerara reeling at 71 for 7.
Himnauth Dinddyal and Qumar Thorrigton then pushed the score to 97 before Torrington was adjusted LBW off Swami for 10. Kester Mc Allester then join Dindyal and rallied the score to 109 before Dindyal caught by Roberts off the bowling of Ranking for 18. Elion Whyte and Mc Allester then took the score to 127 before Whyte was caught for 12 off the bowling of Mark Ranking.
Bowling for Essequibo Mark Ranking grabbed 5 for 23 off 9.5 overs, Leon Swami 2 for 22 from 10 overs, Lance Roberts 2 for 18 from 9 overs, and fast medium bowler Reyaz Khan took the priced wicket of Sachin Singh.
In reply, Essequibo took a very careful and watchful approach to their batting innings, in what can be considered a cautious effort to surpass the target score set by last year’s champions, Demerara. At 38, Essequibo lost their first wicket of Orlando Jailall in the eight over, bowled by BallKishun for 23. Kevin Christian was the next batsman to be dismissed, bowled by Ashmead Nedd for 29, to leave Essequibo 80 for 2.

However, the Essequibo batsmen lost some level of stability, as they 5 wickets fell relatively quickly, and Essequibo had to hold their nerves to secure victory, ending with 131 for 7, as Lance Roberts flicked a ball through backward square for 4, complete a good Al round effort – ending on 29 not out to add to his 2 wickets.
Essequibo won by 3 wickets. Mark Ranking was adjudged Man of the Match for his 5 for 23.

Over at Everest Guyana Select X1 won the toss and batting first. However, they found the runs difficult to accumulate and could only muster a paltry 70. Richard Ramdehol made 16 and Abdul Ramsammy 10. Bowling for Berbice, Kelvin Omroa grabbed 3 for 16 off 10 overs, Mahendra Dorasami 3 for 13 off 6 overs and Kelvon Anderson 3 wickets for 2 runs off 1.3 overs.
In reply, Berbice made light work of their target, reaching 71 for 1 off just 11.4 overs. Alex Algu slammed 43, while Brandon mangal and Junior Sinclair was left not out on 14 and 3 respectively.
Daniel Mootoo was the lone wicket taker for the Guyana Under-15 Select X1.
Berbice won the match by 9 wickets, with Alex Algu being adjudged Man of the Match.

 

The Final round of the Igloo Under 17 Inter- County cricket will be held Saturday 29th March,2017. Essequibo will oppose Guyana Select Under 15 at Everest Cricket ground and Demerara will be taking on Berbice at GCC grounds.
